While software engineers make great entrepreneurs, coding isn’t the only thing that you need to grow a business. Below are 4 tips to build a business as a software developer:

1. Start building – if you are a software engineer you know how to build. Build an app, a website, and a prototype. Something that is demoable to a prospective customer. Build yesterday. Software engineering has the power to build but many are left along with only ideas. Don’t be a wantrepreneur. Start building.
2. You’re here to build a business – Not to try out every new shiny new engineering technology that you might be vaguely interested in or want to learn. Do not take this business opportunity to learn say React if you know Angular. You have chosen not to focus on building a business but on learning a new framework. It’s a trap. This is a business. Not here to waste your time with Engineering distractions.
3. Do not over-focus on the engineering side of the business. Is engineering important? Yes. But it’s not the only thing that your business need. You need to build a very good product. You can have a super cool codebase and tech stack but a garbage product. Marketing is super important. Even if you have a great product with great engineering if you don’t have great marketing it will underperform. There are a lot of other components to building and running a business.
4. You don’t need to hire early on.
   Don’t ever think that adding more engineers to your team will necessarily make your product or business grow faster. You can build a great product or company with just 1-2 engineers, without needing to hire 5-10-20 engineers especially early on.
