Every other job is disposable!

Justin Welsh, a solopreneur and digital creator I follow recently posted that every other job is disposable. It hit me hard since I was laid off recently too.

Talking about the long-term prospect of a job I have a different way of thinking:

I am in search of a job where you are not disposable. Most of the employers are happy to pay you till you produce results. But there are times when as an employee you change the life-long trajectory of a business with your high-value activities and amass greater results but still you get a disposable treat.

The employers who don’t recognize such efforts are not worth it.

I like the kind of employment stories where a clerk turns into a business partner in his 10-20-30 years tenure. When you produce great results you deserve to be a part of the business for life.

Otherwise, you are better off building your own thing.

To evaluate whether a job is a long-term fit or not you can ask the following questions in an interview:

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR ME?

• After 3 years working for you if I got sick and had to take 6 months off for recovery what would be your action? Would you fire me?

• What would a career progression look like if I worked at your company for more than 10 years?

• Can I in future invest in the company to become a shareholder?

I am not against 9-5 and getting a job for salary bumps but I think even a fresher should think about the long-term viability of the job from the interview day. Having a long-term career in one organization is a very fulfilling journey so I recommend young job seekers to consider it as well.
