I might restart teaching programming

Back in 2011 when I was running GDG Kathmandu and Semicolon Developers I used to be surrounded by students everywhere.

And every now and then they would ask me when would my next batch of web programming class start.

I used to teach Professional Web Application Development and Android Mobile Application Development courses. And there was no shortage of students.

Until 2015, before moving to the US I taught around 20 batches of students, a total of 120 students over the period. They would come to my class with some or no programming experience from college and graduate with a newfound confidence in web or mobile application development.

Many companies who were looking to venture into Android development partnered with Semicolon for tutoring their employees on Android Mobile App Development.

For me, I loved transferring knowledge and teaching was a natural outlet.

And, I received great 1-on-1 feedback from my students which gave me motivation to continue what I was doing.

All my batches would fill with recommendations from my students.

Those were very fulfilling days. To help someone build a skill from the ground up was a very pleasing experience.

Most importantly, I miss teaching.

And I strongly believe that the highest form of job that you can have is teaching or mentoring someone.

Last week, I had a catchup online with one of my students who is a lead architect at an outsourcing company in Kathmandu.

He said how I helped him develop his foundation in programming and recommended I start teaching classes again.

These past years I thought that learning materials are readily available on the internet everywhere so a student could easily pave out a path of his/her own quickly if he or she knew what to look for.

But the student I met online pointed out that information is scattered and there is no structured way to learn online still. Moreover, learning from someone experienced is always valuable no matter what.

This has kept me thinking now. And I am planning on getting back to teaching.

I believe having a good instructor can greatly impact the learning pathway of a student.

I am self-taught when it comes to web development.

Early 2000, when I started learning web development from online resources I was constantly in struggle to grasp the ideas and concepts of web programming.

So I joined a 7 days course on web development. Seeing the instructor put into practice what I was self-learning was a confidence booster. I was all ready to go by myself just after 3 days of formal guidance.

I believe I can replicate the same feeling of confidence in my students.

But my priorities have changed over the years.

I won’t be able to teach in person offline as I used to.

If I have to restart teaching it would be online so that I can dedicate myself to teaching without distracting my day-to-day priorities.

I am thinking about it but since I have been out of touch with the community for all these years I am not sure how would students find me.

But one thing is for sure, I am having positive thoughts about restarting classes.

So in the coming days, I will keep it in mind to reach out to students.

To my friends and colleagues who read my blogs, if you know someone who is interested in learning about website development please connect them to me.

If you are a student who is looking for online classes on web development, please leave a comment of your interest in this blog post.

Thanks for your help.

Enjoy your Friday.
